Aeropuerto - Where Balearic Dreams Begin & End

Who could ever have imagined that the outside of an airport could be as high on everyone’s Ibiza bucket list as a sunset at Cafe Del Mar? The obligatory photo opportunity beneath the back lit white lettering of ‘Ibiza - Eivissa’ on the sandstone terminal of old was always the first and last image on every discerning Ibiza fanatic’s roll of Kodak. Honking horns and tirades from passing drivers, the main challenge was to avoid a taxi careering into your legs. There was a knack to it. The airport photo tradition is still alive and well today. Some things never change, but the airport certainly has. It may have lost its classic Balearic edge on the outside replaced with a rather Un-Balearic graphite coloured fascia, but it still serves a purpose. Firstly as the backdrop to everyone's first photo when they touch down. Secondly as the essential gateway to the island and the gateway to home. Ecstatic faces in arrivals. Distraught and somewhat distorted faces in departures.

Formerly a military airport in an area known as Es Codolá in the 1930’s, expansion happened gradually over the decades with domestic flights beginning in the 1950’s. It was in the 1960’s that the airport invested in new equipment, lighting, runways and a new terminal, enabling international flights to come and go for the first time. Since then you have probably seen a big change every time you arrive. Expansion has been rapid especially over the last 10 years which saw passenger numbers double to 8,104,316 traveling through the airport by 2018. Touching down on the runway today you can still see the original terminal building with the classic archways and vintage lettering. When your undercarriage hits that runway, it certainly makes the heart flutter. Plus the air traffic in and out has links to euphoric experiences on the terraces of Space and DC10 too.

At first glance, our tribute in print to the building that signifies the beginning and end of Balearic adventures takes the form of a vintage luggage tag with the airport code 'IBZ' centre stage. However dig deeper and emblazoned across the code as a subtle watermark is a comprehensive yet no doubt incomplete round up of just some of the people, places and things that we have experienced every time we have touched down in Ibiza since 1998. We have absolutely no doubt you will be able to cross reference many of the list with your island memories. Some are from way back, some are from recent times, some are simply timeless, but all of them are an intrinsic part of what took us on the incredible journey that has lead us to create these prints channeling the wonders of Ibiza.
