Looking back through old Ibiza photographs, we always seemed to have a number featuring dogs. Including one of an Irish Setter who lived in a house not far from Cafe del Mar. Low and behold and in no way linked to our hairy, post-sunset amigo, our own family dog of two years is an Irish Setter. There were a host of others including the bulldog whose tongue was forever rolled out on the street in front of him as he lay flat out legs akimbo watching the world go by and one that looked like a bear on a lead that walked the streets of Ibiza Town. But there was always one particular dog that was even more unique than "The Bear" and that was the Podenco - The Ibizan Hound.
We knew nothing of this breed before we started to visit Ibiza. But when you see your first, you never forget. Lean, leggy and almost deer like, its pink nose, elongated head, distinctive ears and deep caramel eyes are like no other. They would prance by with incredible elegance with all eyes on them as they cantered. This glowing praise is of little or no assistance to rabbits who will either be running in the opposite direction or hanging from the jaws of the hound as they were bred to hunt them along with other small game.
Historically though, this animal's roots can be traced back to Egyptian times. "Tesem" is the ancient Egyptian hunting dog the Podenco is said to evolve from and drawings of a Tesem type dog features in prehistoric Egyptian Amratian culture, dated from the Protodynastic Period of Egypt (3200 BC - 3000 BC). And now they roam the Balearic landscape of Ibiza with everyone fawning in their wake. We had no choice but to document their impact and beauty in one of our first designs. If you are a rabbit or you just want to check out these magnificent beasts up close and personal without having to look very hard, check out the stunning bronze work of sculptor Andreu Moreno on Passeig de s'Alamera in Santa Eulalia or, if you're brave, on the roundabout at the entrance to the port in Ibiza town.
