Cap de Barbaria - There is a Light That Never Goes Out (until sunrise)
We haven't been to Formentera enough. Our first trip we completely underestimated the size of the island, on arrival expecting everywhere to be within flip flop attired walking distance. This is not the case. So we flip flopped back to port to hire bicycles and off we went before cycling back to port to get a taxi. The learning curve had begun. We only had a few beaches in our sights and lunch at Las Banderas. We made it with flip flops intact. But with age comes wisdom and return journeys meant we got that little bit further, but we still haven't scratched the surface and we're happy with that still ahead of us.
The one fact I always remember was attached to the island of Formentera was that they filmed the iconic Bounty chocolate bar ads there. Impressive. And rightly so, because the beaches are outrageously beautiful. However, this piece of folklore could be utilised as the ultimate way to entice the kids on a family day trip / "boring" photo shoot celebrating a bastion of the island's landscape; the lighthouse at Cap de Barbaria. A beach full of Bounty's they may have thought? But alas on the last day of our holiday when we had planned the trip across, our youngest contracted conjunctivitis and the photo shoot was not to be. Which leaves the perfect excuse to get out there again very soon.
This lighthouse is really quite something though. Built in 1971, it is a mere 100km from Africa's Barbary Coast one way and a stones throw from Es Vedra in the other. Depending on the stone. It becomes one of the Balearic islands most notable sunset spots and when day turns slowly to night on Formentera it feels like a remote outpost compared to others. It's a simple structure and provides a simple service protecting the passing nautical travellers from the rugged coastline. But the barren, dusty landscape that surrounds it creates the special mysticism that is beyond compare day or night. We knew we had to include this in our first collection. By flip flop, bicycle or taxi, we urge you to see the light.
